Description

Are you looking for a resource to help you teach text features and to assess your students’ understanding of nonfiction text features? Do you want to tie in your literacy instruction with your current social studies content? Look no further!

WHAT’S INSIDE?

The first page in this document is called “Comprehension Check.” These comprehension questions can be used with ANY of the passages included in this product, or really any nonfiction text! Just choose the passage you are going to use, then copy the Comprehension Check onto the back of the chosen passage. You will then have a two-sided nonfiction assessment that will assess text feature identification as well as nonfiction reading comprehension.

10 Passage Topics:

  • Colonial America
  • Roots of Democracy
  • Oregon Trail
  • The Pony Express
  • Underground Railroad
  • The Civil War
  • Transcontinental Railroad
  • Ellis Island
  • Making Money
  • Needs, Wants, Goods, and Services

PEDAGOGY

I originally created this product for my own classroom. I needed a way to assess my students’ understanding of text features other than by observation, and I wanted the assessment to tie in to our science and social studies curriculum. Thus, this product was born. The kids have fun using different colors to identify the different text features, and it provides great work samples for me.

HOW CAN I USE IT?

  • enrichment or remediation for understanding text features
  • direct instruction regarding using text features to identify main idea
  • morning work, bell ringer, seat work
  • assessment
  • homework

WILL IT WORK FOR ME?

The average Lexile level of the 12 nonfiction passages in this product is 820L (equivalent to a GRL of Q or higher). This product is geared toward third through fifth graders, although it is much more rigorous when used in the lower grades. I use these exact passages with my second graders. They are perfect for shared reading as a class or for buddy reading.
