I was moved to third grade this year, so I needed a fresh batch of read alouds. After all, I have some former students in my class, and I didn’t want to reread any chapter books to them!
After thinking back on books I loved as a kid and asking other teachers for recommendations, I purchased the following books for my classroom:
How to Be Cool in the Third Grade
Judy Moody is in a Mood
The One and Only Ivan
Because of Winn Dixie
The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
The Witches
How to Eat Fried Worms*
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory*
Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy
Lemonade Wars
Lone Bean
The Wild Robot
Third Grade Angels
Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing*
Did I leave any of your favorites off of my list?! Let me know in a comment below!

I love Third Grade Angels! I'd add Matilda and the wayside school books. I'm switching from third to second this year. Any second grade recommendations?

Hi! Thanks! To my second graders, I always read the Wayside School series, LuLu Walks the Dog, Holes, Skinnybones, and Fudge-a-Mania. I also enjoyed reading Junie B books around the holidays. They are quick (and hilarious) reads for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Valentine's Day!

I love There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom and Poppy!!

Students have enjoyed The Search for Delicious by Natalie Babbitt… its kind of like fantasy & historical fiction combined.

My 3rd grade students love The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane and The Search for Delicious

Frindle is always a good one!! Andrew Clements books are so relatable since they are about school-aged kids. I also LOVED to listen to my third grade teacher read from Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends, so I always try to fit some of his poems in somewhere.

Wonder is a favorite, for all the great discussions it opens up. Much better than the movie!

Hank the cow dog, my son loves them. We read them last year in 2nd grade. We already started Percy Jackson this year for third grade. Also The Magic Treehouse is always a good standard as well as The Boxcar Children. Next year I’m hoping to get him interested in Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys
